Throughout Primis, Modotsu goes through significant changes in character and morality that I think make her an interesting character to the reader.

Again, I won’t ever insist on any interpretations of Primis’ story because the idea is more that you understand the characters as separate unique people, not super heroes, not self inserts for you, but unique people. You can view any of them as foolish, incorrect, stupid, annoying, good, smart, correct, but the only important part is that you understand them.

That said, Modotsu is meant to focus on what it really means for someone to change. Does them changing mean you shouldn’t hold them to their past? At what point does someone change too much? Can someone change into somebody completely new? Can people change at all?

At the start of Primis, Modotsu is fairly evil. She inflicts incredibly harm over little to no offenses, she hurts the weak, she’s sadistic, and she revels in the destruction she causes. Even when she meets Locke, she just kills her, again and again, torturing her soul for the fun of it.

Then she finally runs into Locke when life got her miserable first. She changes her approach thinking she’ll bring her up to bring her down again but incidentally gets brought up herself too. This time she decides not to kill Locke, she tries to be better. Despite becoming a better person, she gets hurt for it because her powers correlate to an aggressive mindset so when she relaxed she was essentially weakened.

From that point on in the series she is a chaotic, but well intentioned member of the cast. Despite the fact that she was the same one who murdered Locke so many times. Locke believes Modotsu is better while Zenori and Fanumi still view her negatively.

She was evil, but she becomes something different. She still falls back on some old habits such as her sadism, but otherwise she works with Locke to try and protect people and take down Xia who threatens their lives.

The question is essentially, does her capacity to be evil mean she is still evil? Is she unable to change even in the circumstance where she reincarnates, does the damage still matter if its a reality that’s already gone by? If no one even knows about the damage but her, does it matter? After being reincarnated so many times, do you owe people who’ve wronged you a chance? How long does it take to forgive, or can a negative impression truly persist for all of time? There’s no objective answer, but its what I want the viewer to think about. They’re free to like or dislike Modotsu (only real requirement is that you think she’s cool if I’m being honest), but I hope that her jarring shift isn’t taken as a fault because “she was bad” because that is the entire point.
